During my Oslob tour, we visited this church ruins called Cuartel. It is the oldest church ruins in Oslob, South Cebu. Nothing much in here actually, just ruins, however, it still good to check this out when you are in Oslob.
Historical Significance
The Cuartel Ruins—derived from the Spanish word “cuartel,” meaning barracks—were originally constructed to serve as military housing for Spanish soldiers during the late 1800s, around the 1860s to 1890s. The project was led by local leader Don Marcos Sabandal but was left unfinished following the arrival of American forces in 1898.
Unique Architectural Features
Constructed from thick coral stones—some sourced from a collapsed church bell tower—the structure showcases robust craftsmanship with its double-row arches and coral-stone façade. These walls have impressively withstood time and the elements.
