DIY Travel Guide: Canyoneering in Badian to Kawasan Falls, Alegria, South Cebu

Travel is a wonderful gift that you can give to yourself. Travel while still young and do Canyoneering because you can no longer do it when you’re old. I was looking forward for the Canyoneering activity during my stay at Moalboal.  A lot of drivers and locals offer canyoneering for the same rate, 1,200 pesos and you can huggle the fare going to Badian. I tried to look for a cheaper one and I found a travel agency booth near the Backpackers Lodge. They offer 1,200 only and free ride going to Badian and back to Moalboal. I booked for canyoneering the next day.

Meet up was 9:00 AM and surprisingly my group were all foreigners. So nosebleed again hahaha. We registered first before starting canyoneering. Safety gears are also included like vest, headgear and aqua shoes. Underwater cameras and GoPro are available for rent but a little bit pricey. I just used my mobile camera with a waterproof case but I suggest to don’t do the same. My mobile phone was broken after canyoneering. Action cameras are highly recommended.

After the registration, we then started to trek going down to Kawasan Falls. It took us less than 20 minutes trek to reach the first waterfall. We need to jump down. it’s just 5 feet, so the first one was okay. The guides will do a briefing on the dos and donts when jumping down the cliff.

We continued to trek and the second waterfall is a bit higher. Canyoneering defines as waterfall jumping so guts and no fear factor are really needed. Though it’s optional to jump, but it’s good to try if you’re into extreme sports.

My first and second jump were okay. On my third jump, I made a wrong move. I fell on the water facing chest and stomach first. I felt a burning sensation in my chest, stomach, and legs. It’s like the water punched me so hard. I grasped for air in a second and it really hurts. It was a 22 ft jump and after a couple of minutes, bruises on my legs became visible from red to very dark red.

On the next jump, I felt so brave that I tried again to jump despite of the bruises I’ve got. (hindi na natuto :D) This time, my jump was almost perfect. I accidentally slipped on the rock before I fell on the water, so my hips landed first on the water. hahaa malas jud or d lng jud kamao!

I gave up after that. I didn’t dare to jump on the last 3 waterfalls. Those were very high like 45 ft. I cannot imagine the damage it will cause me if I jump on a wrong position. If only my previous jumps were good, then I’ll have the courage to jump on the 45 ft waterfall. The highest was 65 ft, but they closed it, a tourist’s life was taken after jumping on the highest waterfall.

I enjoyed the tarzan swing and jump. For 10 pesos you can try this unlimited. We are now heading to the lower portion of Kawasan Falls.

Lunch was ready when we arrived. It was a sumptuous lunch together with the group. Although we spent a short time together, it was nice meeting these people and getting along with them and seeing they enjoyed staying in the Philippines. Proud Filipina here.

When we arrived back in Moalboal, I felt worst. When I lie down, raising up my arms or picking up something on the floor, my ribs hurt and I cannot bear the pain. I went to the massage area in Moalboal, the body massage was painful at first but I felt a little better after that. The therapist said it was common to them, tourists complaining about muscle pain after canyoneering. Sometimes I regret not jumping on the last waterfall but after all, it’s a good decision not to jump.

The canyoneering experience was worth it but be very extra careful when doing this, it might cause you harm. If you’re in doubt, just don’t jump. It needs courage and presence of mind.
